Loan agreement signing for the Jakarta MRT East-West Line Project
2024.05.13
On May 13th, 2024, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a loan agreement with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. The agreement provides a Japanese ODA loan up to 140,699 million yen for the Jakarta Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit East-West Line Project Phase 1 (I).
The purpose of this project is to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance the living and investment environment, reduce the environmental impact, and support the climate change initiatives in the Jakarta metropolitan area. This will be achieved by the construction of MRT East-West Line, which will cover a total length of approximately 84.1km, connecting Banten and West Jawa. The funds will be mainly utilized for the development of Phase 1 Stage 1 (Tomang - Medan Satria), which covers a total length of approximately 25 km, as well as the basic design and Transit Oriented Development study of Phase 1 Stage 2 and beyond. This agreement will follow The Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP), which require the use of advanced technology and expertise from Japanese firms, and aims to increase the visibility of Japanese ODA through technology transfer to developing countries for the underground tunnel construction, rolling stocks and signaling system.
The MRT North-South Line, which commenced operation in March 2019 with Japan ODA support, has been an integral part of Jakarta’s transportation infrastructure, supporting economic activities and daily lives of its citizens. The construction of phase 2 of North-South Line is currently underway, and the East-West Line will be added soon to expand railway network and enhance convenience and efficiency. With the operational expertise of PT. MRTJ, developed through Japanese technology transfer, it is expected that the MRT East-West Line will maintain the high standards of safety, punctuality and comfort that are synonymous with the MRT Nort-South Line.
