Workshop on Sustainable Energy and Food Resource Production Systems
2024.07.24
Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) collaborates with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) is implementing Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program. SATREPS program promotes international joint research with the goal of resolving global issues. One of the SATREPS programs in Indonesia, titled “Integrated Sustainable Energy and Food Production from Microalgae-based Carbon Capture and Utilization.”, conducted a workshop on “Integrated Sustainable Energy and Food Production”, on July 24, 2024.
The research program started in July 2023 and will run for five years. It aims to develop technologies to produce fuel and new fermented foods using microalgae. This research involves the development of technologies for mass cultivation of microalgae, fermentation technology, hydrogen production from biomass, and low-carbonization of coal-fired power plants.
Researchers from Indonesian research institutions, universities, the energy sector, and government agencies participated in the discussion about the decarbonization of power plants. The discussions included topics on carbon recirculation, capture, and utilization using biomass (including microalgae) and hydrogen/ammonia. Moreover, they also discussed the potential use of microalgae for food production to support food sustainability.
The workshop comprised two-panel sessions:
Panel Session 1: "Decarbonization of Power Plants Using Biomass and Ammonia" There was an active discussion on decarbonizing coal-fired power plants using biomass and hydrogen-based fuels, particularly hydrogen and ammonia. Participants exchanged views on expanding the use of sustainable energy sources toward decarbonized and clean energy systems.
Panel Session 2: "Policy to Promote Green Fermentation and Sustainable Food Production" This session focused on policies to harness the potential of microalgae-based green fermentation. Participants shared specific policy proposals aimed at promoting sustainable food production in Indonesia.
This research aims to advance technologies for decarbonization, carbon capture, and utilization with microalgae, proposing economically viable policies for Southeast Asia to enhance sustainable energy and food productivity.
