Opening Ceremony for Asahan No. 3 Hydroelectric Power Plant

On January 20, 2025, the opening ceremony for the Asahan No. 3 Hydroelectric Power Plant, funded by an ODA loan, was held in a hybrid format in the presence of Indonesian dignitaries, alongside other power plants operated by PT. PLN.

During the ceremony, Mr. Prabowo Subianto, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, and Mr. Bahlil Lahadalia, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources emphasized Indonesia's message to achieve a position among developed nations and to promote the development of renewable energy in its energy transition. PT. PLN highlighted JICA's support for the Asahan No. 3 Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The Asahan No. 3 Hydroelectric Power Plant located in North Sumatra Province is a run-of-river hydroelectric power plant with a generating capacity of 174 MW, and JICA provided financial support through ODA loan signed in March 2006. Japanese companies participated in the project as consultants and contractors, working with PT. PLN.

Indonesia has set a national goal of achieving Net Zero by 2060, along with economic growth, and hydropower, as a domestic energy source, is expected to play an important role in achieving this energy transition, along with other renewable energy sources. The completion of this project will not only help alleviate the tight supply and demand in the power grid system of North Sumatra and improve the stability of power supply, but also contribute to the energy transition of Indonesia.

In addition to the Asahan No. 3 Hydroelectric Power Plant, JICA is supporting the construction of renewable energy power plants such as hydroelectric and geothermal in Indonesia with ODA loans, and is also providing technical cooperation to achieve energy transition in the country. We will continue to contribute to Indonesia's energy transition in collaboration with the government of Indonesia.
