Indonesia-Japan 2nd Hydrogen - Ammonia Development Acceleration Forum co-hosted by JICA, MEMR, BRIN and IFHE took place to enhance private and public collaboration among Indonesia and Japanese stakeholders.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) together with Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and Indonesia Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy (IFHE) co-hosted a forum on the promotion of hydrogen and ammonia in Indonesia in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 25. More than 80 on-site participants and 70 online-participants attended the forum from both Indonesian and Japanese private and public stakeholders.
At the forum, MEMR, BRIN, Ministry of Industry (MOI) and National Standardization Agency (BSN) introduced their ongoing efforts of Indonesian Government side for the promotion of the development of hydrogen and ammonia. On the other hand, representatives from PT. PLN and PT. Pupuk Indonesia, PT. Pertamina introduced the insights from industry sector and business perspective together with several Japanese private companies such as IHI corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Power IDS CO., Ltd.. The participants discussed the current challenge and possible solution, possible cooperation from several aspects about exportation and use of hydrogen and technology and knowledge transfer.
In the forum, Mr. SATO Akira, Senior Representative of JICA Indonesia Office expressed sincere gratitude towards Japanese and Indonesian stakeholders for cooperation with JICA, and expressed that JICA would continuously cooperate with Indonesia to achieve energy transition in Indonesia in line with AZEC (Asia Zero Emission Committee). Also, Ms. Andriah Feby Misna, Director of New and Renewable Energy from Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of MEMR explained the importance of promoting energy transition in Indonesia and expansion of usage of hydrogen and ammonia to realize energy transition.
In the latter part, MEMR Mr. Zulfan Zul, Senior Expert Planner, shared the latest updates about hydrogen and policy and plan for hydrogen development in line with 2060 net zero target. Mr. NAKASHIMA Kojun, Deputy Director of Southeast Asia Division 1 of JICA's Southeast Asia and Pacific Department, explained the background why JICA started the “Data collection survey for promoting hydrogen society in Indonesia” (conducted by Dream Incubator Inc. and Nippon Koei Co., Ltd.) and how Japan can cooperate with Indonesia for hydrogen society promotion in Indonesia. Also, Mr. SUZUKI Kazuya, Executive Officer of DI mentioned importance of supporting schemes in economic perspective to promote usage of Hydrogen by introducing supporting scheme in Japan, Germany, and UK. In the panel-discussion session, panellists from Japan and Indonesia discussed on the business sector initiatives on value chain creation and expected business model of hydrogen and ammonia, together with the government interactions on regulation and standard development for hydrogen market creation.
The Government of Indonesia is at a critical juncture in the energy transition, working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen renewable energy supply capacity, and strengthen energy security. As the country continues to achieve stable economic growth, the need for sustainable and efficient energy solutions is increasing. JICA's cooperation with the Indonesian government aims to address these needs by promoting co-creation and innovation in several key areas. In addition, through this cooperation, which plays an integral role in the energy transition, JICA will contribute to Indonesia's goal of achieving net zero by 2060.
