JICA's recent business contest in Kenya, “InnoVate Against GBV”, illuminated the power of innovation in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). This initiative, a collaborative effort between the "GBV Elimination Project" and the "Enterprise Competitiveness Enhancement Project," brought together nearly 180 companies vying to develop sustainable solutions to this pervasive issue. JICA's commitment was evident in the six weeks of intensive mentoring provided to the ten finalists, culminating in a pitch event before a diverse audience of investors, startups, government officials, UN representatives, and NGO personnel. The top contenders were awarded crucial support for developing their ventures and it was announced that one of the successful start-ups will have an opportunity to present their business at TICAD 9 in Japan in August 2025.

CONNECT-Her, the runner-up, presented a digital platform connecting domestic service providers with clients, creating safe employment opportunities and promoting economic independence for survivors. K-linik, taking third place, offered a vital service through online medical consultations, providing discreet and accessible medical and psychosocial support to those affected by GBV.

This contest marked a significant step in JICA's broader mission of promoting gender equality. By identifying and nurturing businesses capable of attracting investment and driving real change, JICA demonstrated the effectiveness of international cooperation in addressing complex social issues. The initiative underscored the importance of recognizing GBV as a problem solvable through business-driven innovation, a concept still gaining traction globally. The success of this program not only offers hope for a future free from GBV but also lays the groundwork for similar initiatives across Africa, potentially transforming the landscape of support for women's peace and security. The event served as a powerful catalyst, sparking dialogue and inspiring stakeholders to embrace the potential of business as a force for good in the fight against GBV.
