On Saturday, 21 March 2026, the JEPAK Alumni (JICA Ex‑Participants Alumni of Kenya) gathered for their 38th Annual General Meeting — a milestone for an association that has grown from a small network in the early 1980s into a vibrant community of professionals inspired by experiences in Japan. Founded almost four decades ago, JEPAK continues to strengthen bonds while championing skills, knowledge‑sharing, and community impact across Kenya.

In December 2025, the alumni committee hosted an education day for members and their families at the KENGEN Olkaria Geothermal Plant in Naivasha — Africa’s largest geothermal power complex. Ex‑participants at the plant led interactive lectures and guided tours, helping young learners link the science behind geothermal power to the electricity that lights their homes — sparking genuine curiosity and a new appreciation for engineering.

Soon after, the committee ran a recruitment and orientation session for newly returned members. This provided an opportunity for them to learn about JEPAK’s history, constitution, and mandate, and to raise thoughtful questions about both JEPAK and JICA — an energizing exchange that widened the circle of active participants.

A week before the AGM, members visited Oloolua Primary School in Kajiado County for a tree‑planting day. Together with pupils, teachers, and invited guests, they planted fruit trees that will enrich and nourish the school’s environmental and agricultural lessons for years to come.

During the AGM, attendees reconnected, reflected on achievements, and shared ideas to innovate activities in the year ahead. The discussions were lively and forward‑looking — exactly the spirit that has kept the community strong for 38 years.

At the meeting, they also celebrated a new milestone — the release of a JEPAK documentary produced by the committee. The film highlights the association’s history and vision, featuring interviews with former chairs who have shaped its direction over time. Everyone was encouraged to watch and share the documentary via the link below:

In his remarks at the AGM, the JICA Chief Representative, Mr. Shinkawa Makoto, emphasized the significance of the alumni network:
“This association is part of your memories of Japan and although JICA cannot take everyone to Japan, we know that through the success of JEPAK and the strength of this association, Japan has been brought home to Kenya.”

JEPAK remains a great example of how knowledge gained abroad can inspire local innovation and transform communities.
