Seven infant ventilators donated by JICA to major medical institutions in Moldova

On September 25, 2023, JICA Ukraine Office team, visited the "Mother and Child Institute (MCI)" and the "Republican Hospital" in Chisinau, to follow up on the installation and operational status of infant ventilators donated by JICA under the grant agreement with the Government of Moldova.

These two hospitals received four infant ventilators on 4 September 2023, following the previous donation of three same equipment under JICA’s emergency support in September 2022. With this newly donated equipment, Moldovan medical institutes have received seven infant ventilators that strengthened the capacity of neonatal intensive care through JICA's cooperation.

During the visits, the team had the opportunity to make observations of the equipment in the hospital and had discussions regarding the use of the donated equipment with medical doctors and biomedical engineers.

The medical staff explained the great advantages of the equipment for their work and expressed their gratitude for the donation. It was mentioned that due to the limited budgetary resources in this difficult time, the hospitals really appreciate valuable donations from JICA that enable providing better treatment to newborns who need special treatments.

In the period of 2023 – 2024, JICA will provide Moldovan hospitals with more medical equipment through the program for strengthening the medical system, JICA's grant aid program with a budget of up to 1 billion yen.

JICA's assistance aims at strengthening the health system in Moldova, which has been significantly affected by the refugee emergency in the region. Since the start of the invasion by Russia to Ukraine, Moldova has received over 800,000 refugees, mostly aged, women and children. Currently, around 100,000 Ukrainian displaced people stay in Moldova. Moldovan government keeps providing full medical support to those in need and JICA will support the efforts of the government.
