Sustainable Forest Management Training (3rd Training for Forest management by PNGFA-JICA Forest Project)

2024.03.08

JICA is working with the PNG Forest Authority (PNGFA) on a project called “Capacity Development Project for reducing Carbon Emissions from Forest Degradation through Commercial Logging in PNG by Improving Forest Monitoring System of Logging Operation”. The project aims to strengthen the capacity of stakeholders to enforce rules and procedures for logging operations, enhance the practice of natural regeneration to improve forest degradation and promote low carbon emission logging, and develop effective field carbon monitoring procedure or system for logging operation in natural forest in PNG.

As part of these activities, regional trainings were conducted. The first and second training/workshop were conducted last year, one at Port Moresby for Southern region, and the other one in Vanimo for Momase region. The third workshop/training was recently conducted at Kimbe on February 27th to 1st March 2024 for New Guinea Islands region to ensure that all stakeholders understand and amend the regulations such as The Planning, Monitoring and Control Procedure (PMCP) and the amended PNG Logging Code of Practice (LCoP).

There were 28 PNGFA staff who attended from East New Britain, Manus, Bougainville, and New Ireland Province. Similar to the previous training, the session consisted of classroom lectures on PMCP and LCoP, and on-site training at the logging site. All 28 trainees successfully completed the four-day training. This time not only did the Japanese experts from JICA provide guidance, but three staff from the JICA PNG office also took part and observed the field activities. The training was properly implemented as all stakeholders were fully satisfied.

PNGFA and JICA are planning the next phase of training for forest loggers. JICA will continue to cooperate with the PNGFA and other PNG government agencies and various partners.
