Final Seminar Organized by PNG Power Limited and JICA

On Thursday 24th October 2024, PNG Power Limited (PPL) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held their long-awaited seminar on the Project for the improvement of Planning and Operation of the Power System.
Constant Power outage is a growing concern of the people of PNG and the PNG government has recognized that issue and set a policy to increase the electrification rate to 70% by 2030. JICA PNG with the support from JICA expert team provided support under the Technical Cooperation scheme with PPL to resolve this issue by way of providing training to 15 PPL officers in System Planning, Financial & Economic analysis, Protection Coordination, Transmission line maintenance and substation maintenance.

The expert team also shared brief information on the activities of the project, mainly on the implementation of the three components of the project which was, the training of the trainers, formulation of the Manual and Establishment of the HRD system.

Not only did the 15 PPL participants graduate with certificates as trainers but JICA also assisted PPL with materials such as the engine winch and southern cross rope to assist the officers to lift a set of insulator units up to the tower.

Mr. Nehemaiah Naris, Acting Chief Executive Officer of PPL, thanked the Japanese people for there continues support and he also congratulated the 15 PPL officers and asked them to share the knowledge and skills they acquired in their training to their fellow officer in PPL.

Mr. MATSUOKA Hideaki, Chief representative of JICA PNG, briefly shared with the attendees, JICA’s contribution in supporting PNG power, he explained that JICA’s support began in 1979 with the Warangoi hydroelectric project up to now and he stated that JICA will continue to support in building a sustainable society the people of Papua New Guinea.
