On World Children’s Day: Expanding the Challenge of “Connecting Learning” at the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) International Conference
2025.11.20
November 20 marks World Children’s Day, established by the United Nations, to promote the rights of every child to grow up healthy and receive quality education. This day serves as an important reminder of the value of education worldwide. JICA shares this vision and continues to work toward improving the quality of education for the future of all children.
As part of these efforts, six representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, and JICA experts participated in the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) 2025 International Conference, held in Hiroshima from November 10 to 12, 2025. During the conference, they presented on the implementation of online lesson study for Papua New Guinea (PNG) mathematics lecturer networks, and engaged in meaningful exchanges with global experts, gaining valuable insights into international trends and diverse practices in lesson study.

In PNG, the Project for Strengthening Primary Teacher Pre-Service Education in Mathematics and Science (STEPMAS) has introduced online lesson study to address challenges such as geographical isolation and disparities in teacher training. Even in environments where physical gatherings are difficult, mathematics lecturers have collaborated on lesson planning and material development, shared and observed lesson videos, and engaged in reflective discussions. These efforts have fostered a sustainable professional learning community. The initiative has led to significant outcomes, including improved subject knowledge in mathematics, enhanced pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), better strategies for addressing misconceptions, strengthened collaboration across provinces, and the establishment of a culture of reflective practice. Importantly, it has demonstrated that online lesson study can provide learning opportunities equal to—or even greater than—those of traditional face-to-face approaches, opening new possibilities for education.

At WALS, the STEPMAS approach was highly praised for effectively addressing PNG’s unique challenges. In line with the conference theme, “Tsunagu” (Connect), participants reaffirmed that online collaboration is essential for the future of teacher education. Lesson study not only strengthens individual teaching skills but also plays a vital role in building a culture of collaboration across teacher training institutions.

The online lesson study initiative launched in PNG marks a significant step toward learner-centered teaching, promoting reflection and collaboration among lecturers, evidence-based instruction, and the formation of sustainable professional learning communities. JICA will continue to expand this effort, striving to “connect learning” and improving the quality of education for the benefit of all children.
