On March 19, 2026, three JICA Volunteers working at primary schools in Papua New Guinea (PNG) conducted a teacher training workshop in Port Moresby for approximately 50 in-service primary school teachers.

The training focused on how to use science textbooks developed with JICA’s support. It introduced lesson approaches that incorporate demonstration lessons and simple science experiments. By experiencing these activities themselves, participating teachers had the opportunity to think about how to apply them in their own classrooms.

During the workshop, participants took part in a Demonstration lesson using the textbooks and teacher guides. They also engaged in experiments on light, magnetism, and electromagnets, as well as a hands-on activity to create a simple teaching aid (a wind vane) using locally available materials. Teachers joined as “students” in the lesson and gained a better understanding of how to use experiments and textbooks effectively in their teaching.

The training demonstrated that practical, activity-based learning can be implemented even in environments with limited teaching materials. It also encouraged strong interest and engagement among participating teachers.

JICA will continue to support improvements in mathematics and science education in PNG by promoting effective use of textbooks and strengthening teachers’ instructional skills.
