On May 21, 2026, twenty-five government officials from six Pacific Island countries including PNG participated in the “J-PRISM 3 Mini-Online Seminar on Waste Management Institutions” and had a lively and passionate discussion. The J-PRISM 3 is the Japanese Technical Cooperation Project for Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management in Pacific Island Countries Phase 3.
The event was held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online at the Ministry of Local Government office in Fiji. The seminar featured the following agenda:
Share the results of a survey on waste management institutions which was conducted by J-PRISM 3.
Presentation on “Inter-municipal Cooperation in Fiji” by Mr. Azam Khan, Lami Town Council, Fiji
Presentation on “The role of major cities: Technical assistance to other local bodies by National Capital District Commission (NCDC)” by Mr. John Navara, NCDC, PNG
Presentation on “Japan’s Municipal Solid Waste Management Institutions and Human Resource Management” by a J-PRISM 3 Expert.
The seminar provided participants with valuable opportunities to learn from one another, followed by an active exchange of views among the participants. The waste management institutions vary significantly across the Pacific region. While the ideal institutional structure depends on each country’s unique geographic conditions, demographics, and other factors, the sharing of information is highly valuable for considering more efficient and effective organization in the future.
