Partnership in Action: Strengthening Community Development and Sustainable Agriculture in Rwamagana

2026.08.10

Mr. Sakamoto Atsuki, Chief Representative of JICA Rwanda, together with JICA Volunteer Mr. Kinoshita Kodai, and JICA staff, paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Mbonyumuvunyi Radjab the Mayor of Rwamagana District to reaffirm the longstanding partnership between JICA and the District and exchange views on ongoing cooperation through grant aid, technical cooperation, and the JICA Volunteer Program.

Following the meeting, the delegation visited the Cyaruhogo Irrigation Scheme, rehabilitated under the JICA Project, where Mr. Kinoshita works closely with the Irrigation Water Users Organization (IWUO), farmers, and local institutions. Drawing on his expertise in agricultural civil engineering, he supports irrigation management and agricultural production while building strong relationships with community members.

Working together with local residents, Mr. Kinoshita contributed to the rehabilitation of a reservoir that had remained unused for more than 40 years, helping to the expansion of rice irrigation with limited resources. He has also supported local efforts to introduce tilapia farming using spring water, creating an additional source of income for the IWUO without affecting irrigation water supplies.

These efforts are improving water access, strengthening irrigation management, and encouraging local ownership. Farmers are increasingly taking the lead in managing and maintaining irrigation infrastructure, demonstrating a strong commitment to the sustainable development of their communities.

Through partnership, technical support, and local initiative, JICA continues to contribute to sustainable agriculture and improved livelihoods in Rwanda.
