Message from the Chief Representative

Thank you for visiting the website of the JICA Senegal Office and for your interest in our work.

The JICA Senegal Office serves as a regional hub in West Africa, working with seven countries: Senegal, Cabo Verde, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, and Mauritania. Together, these countries represent a diverse region of approximately 90 million people and form an economic area with a total nominal GDP of around USD 130 billion. From Senegal, located at the westernmost point of the African continent, we closely cooperate with partner governments, local communities, and many stakeholders across the region.

Senegal is widely recognized as a stable democratic country that has not experienced a coup d’état or civil war since its independence in 1960. The spirit of mutual assistance and hospitality known as Teranga, which is deeply valued by the people of Senegal, forms an important foundation for social cohesion and stability. Since opening our office in 1980, JICA has worked alongside the people of Senegal to address a wide range of development challenges, including agriculture and food security, education and health, vocational training, and essential infrastructure such as water supply, electricity, and logistics. Building on these long‑standing efforts, Senegal also plays an important role as a hub for cooperation across West Africa.

The seven countries we work with each have their own strengths, challenges, and future potential. While some face difficulties related to climate change, economic structures, or security—particularly in parts of the Sahel—the region is also strongly connected through regional frameworks such as the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Taking these regional ties into account, JICA promotes cooperation that strengthens trust between public institutions and local communities, and that enhances resilience, inclusion, and human security.

Looking ahead, the JICA Senegal Office remains committed to working hand in hand with partners in Senegal, across West Africa, and in Japan. By respecting local ownership, valuing partnerships, and investing in people, we aim to contribute to a region where peace and stability take root, opportunities expand, and every individual can live with dignity and hope for the future. We sincerely appreciate your continued understanding, cooperation, and support as we move forward together.
