JICA Provides Essential Veterinary Medicines & Clinical Supplies to Support Dairy Farmers Amid Economic Crisis

Colombo, June 3, 2024 – In response to the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka, which has severely impacted the dairy industry’s access to essential Veterinary medicines and related clinical supplies, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has initiated a timely important assistance for the country’s dairy sector through Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) under Ministry of Agriculture and Plantations. The total grant amount is approximately LKR 80 million. This initiative aims to sustain the momentum of high-quality fresh milk production in the country, thereby strengthening the economy of farm families, improving their nutritional status, and ultimately ensuring food security while ensuring stable increase of milk production across Sri Lanka.
JICA has officially launched this support process by organizing a national level handing-over ceremony today at the Ministry of Agriculture in Colombo. The event was graced by the presence of Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Janaka Dharmakeerthi, Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Mahanama Amarasinghe, Additional Secretary (Livestock), and representatives from Ministry of Agriculture.
This assistance which will be channeled through the DAPH includes 18 important Veterinary medicines and 9 items of Veterinary clinical supplies that are vital for maintaining the health and productivity of dairy farm animals mainly cattle. The official handing-over was represented by Mr. Yamada Tetsuya, Chief Representative of the JICA Sri Lanka Office and team from JICA Sri Lanka office.
At the occasion, "JICA is committed to supporting Sri Lanka's dairy farmers during this challenging period," said by Mr. Yamada Tetsuya, Chief Representative of JICA Sri Lanka Office. "By providing these essential medicines and consumables, JICA aims to support to sustain high-quality milk production, support the livelihoods of farm families, and contribute to the country's overall food security in long run."
