2026.09.16
The Ministry of Health today marked a significant milestone in strengthening Sri Lanka's healthcare sector with the groundbreaking ceremonies for Package 1 and Package 3 of the JICA ODA Loan Health & Medical Services Improvement Project at the District General Hospital, Trincomalee and the Teaching Hospital, Anuradhapura, respectively. The ceremonies were held in the presence of His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The events marked the commencement of construction of two major healthcare infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Under Package 1, a new Cardiology Unit Building will be constructed at the District General Hospital, Trincomalee, while Package 3 includes the construction of a Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Complex Building at the Teaching Hospital, Anuradhapura.
The project seeks to improve services for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly cardiovascular diseases, one of the leading health challenges in Sri Lanka. In addition to Trincomalee and Anuradhapura, hospitals in Kandy, Kurunegala, and Badulla will also benefit from modern medical equipment and upgraded healthcare infrastructure.
These investments will strengthen Sri Lanka's capacity to provide specialized cardiac care, improve access to advanced medical services, and enhance patient outcomes across the country. The new facilities represent an important step toward delivering high-quality healthcare and improving the well-being of the Sri Lankan people.
Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA is proud to support this transformative initiative through its Official Development Assistance (ODA) Loan, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Sri Lanka's healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality medical care for all citizens.
