Sri Lanka Advances Towards a Fully Digital Broadcasting Future Through the DTTB Project

The Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) Project, a landmark initiative of the Government of Sri Lanka funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA, marks a major milestone in the country’s transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting. Through the adoption of Japanese digital broadcasting technology, the project will deliver higher-quality television services with wider nationwide coverage, improve access to multilingual content and public information, introduce the Early Warning Broadcast System (EWBS) for disaster alerts, and support future technologies such as 5G through more efficient spectrum utilization.

To commemorate this achievement, a special programme was held on 28^th September 2026 at the Lotus Tower, Colombo, with the participation of the Hon. Minister of Health and Mass Media, H.E. the Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, and other distinguished guests. The event outlined the project’s vision, implementation roadmap, timeline, and technical framework, highlighting its role in supporting Sri Lanka’s digital transformation and long-term socio-economic development.

On 29 September, representatives from the JICA Sri Lanka Office and the Embassy of Japan conducted a site visit to the Lotus Tower, which will host key DTTB installations. The delegation also visited the planned Yen Loan Project facility and the JICA Grant Aid-supported studios at the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, reaffirming the strong partnership between Sri Lanka and Japan in advancing a modern, inclusive, and resilient digital broadcasting ecosystem.
