Since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023, Sudan has experienced extensive damage to buildings, public facilities, and critical infrastructure, particularly in Khartoum State. It is estimated that approximately 3.3 million tons of debris were generated across the state. While around 1.5 million tons have already been cleared, substantial debris remains. The accumulated debris continues to pose serious challenges to public health and mobility, while hindering efforts to improve living conditions and restore urban functionality.
The project aims to contribute to the recovery of urban functions and the improvement of living conditions by strengthening debris management capacity in Khartoum State.
It builds upon JICA’s long-standing cooperation in the waste management sector in Sudan, including the achievements of the Clean Cities Project and other initiatives in the sector. It also reflects the continued partnership between JICA and UN-Habitat through the African Clean Cities Platform (ACCP). By combining JICA’s experience in solid waste management with UN-Habitat’s expertise in urban recovery, the project will support efforts to address the urgent challenge of debris management in conflict-affected urban areas.
Through this project, JICA will continue working closely with UN-Habitat and relevant Sudanese institutions to support the foundations for future recovery and reconstruction, while helping create safer and healthier living environments for the people of Khartoum State.
