Water

Since Zanzibar became independent in 1964, all of Zanzibar's water facilities were being managed and maintained by the government, which also provided free water to the entire populace. Unfortunately, financial difficulties have prevented the government from repairing aging water facilities or developing new water resources, thus depriving many people of safe and reliable water.

Under the Project for Zanzibar Urban Water Supply Development, Japan is providing assistance to develop new water resources and improve the water distribution system, but separately on-going efforts are needed to autonomously and stably provide safe water. To do so, appropriate water tariff must be collected so that water supply facilities can be maintained and repaired. This project was therefore initiated to build a water tariff collection system under the Zanzibar Water Authority (ZAWA), which was established in 2006.

Under this project, JICA is dispatching five experts to ZAWA to provide training for corporate management in such areas as customer database preparation, bill collection and customer services.
