Roughly 40 percent of Uruguay's approximately 3.3 million residents are concentrated in the capital of Montevideo. Cows and sheep are raised on grazing lands throughout the country. Although the GDP per capita has risen to US $13,510 (2012), the country faces issues such as the facts that roughly 700,000 residents cannot escape from poverty, global climate change is making a profound impact on the agricultural sector, and the energy supply and transportation infrastructure are weak, throttling economic growth. JICA's support to Uruguay is primarily focused on: 1) sustainable growth, 2) social development, and 3) environmental conservation.
