Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) remains steadfast in meeting its goals of achieving quality growth and human security. In recognition of the International Volunteers Day (December 5) and to pay tribute to volunteers across the world and Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCVs), JICA staff chose to be volunteers and cleaned around the community where the JICA office is situated. The staff gave back to the community that JICA operates in by creating a cleaner environment. They also chose to volunteer as a way to celebrate JICA volunteers, their acts of service, and how they constantly give of their time, effort and skills to build people, change the world, and inspire others in the various roles they play to uplift Zimbabwe and its people. The clean-up also aids in the fight of cholera, which advocates for practicing and maintaining good hygiene and disposal of waste in designated places.

Speaking on the sidelines of the clean-up event, JICA volunteer baseball coach, Yuya Yamaguchi said that “I am happy to be a part of this event today because cleaning-up is something that I encourage, even to the youth that I teach baseball in Mutare. We clean our baseball field and surrounding areas, not just to uphold cleanliness in the area, but to foster a lifestyle of cleanliness on a personal level, in their households and in their communities. Many diseases that affect humanity these days like cholera and COVID-19 are known to be fought through practicing personal hygiene. So, as I continue with my assignment for youth development through baseball sports, I am willing to continue with such an activity as the clean-up, because I want to continue to contribute to Zimbabwe and its people.”

She also applauded the volunteers as host organisations and communities bear testament to their transformational work and impact. They leave a positive mark for sustainable development in their different spheres of influence.
