Refresher Training for Extension Officers: Driving Success in Rice Production

2025.11.28

Significant Activities for Impactful Results
November 2025 had significant activities for the Rice Research, Development and Production Advisor Project. The month began with a highly impactful refresher training for extension officers from 10 targeted demonstration sites. This training, facilitated by JICA in collaboration with the Directorate of Research, Education and Specialist Services (DRESS), was a critical step in preparing the implementing team to support farmers for the new cropping season that commenced this November.

Empowering Extension Officers
The training brought together strategic facilitators whose expertise ensured its success:

  1. Dr. Miyazawa – A renowned JICA rice expert with extensive knowledge and experience in rice production.
  2. Mrs. Chizhande – A passionate rice researcher from DRESS, committed to improving yields and quality.
  3. Ms. Makoni – A seasoned agronomist from DRESS, specializing in soil management and crop production.

Extension officers were equipped with the latest techniques and best practices for cultivating NERICA 1, 3, and 7 rice varieties - known for their high yields, drought tolerance, and resilience against pests and diseases. The officers left motivated and ready to transfer this knowledge to farmers.

Impact Already Visible
Following the training, extension officers actively engaged with farmers across communities. Adoption of NERICA varieties and improved agricultural practices is already evident, signalling a promising outlook for increased yields and enhanced food security.

A Collective Effort
We extend sincere gratitude to all stakeholders who organized this training and to the dedicated extension officers for their enthusiasm. If this momentum continues, Zimbabwe’s rice sector will become more resilient, productive, and sustainable.
