Rural Resilience Enhancement Project (RREP)

In Ethiopian rural communities the impact of climate change can be detrimental to the livelihood and subsistence of the highly affected regions. JICA and the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture launched the Rural Resilience Enhancement Project (RREP) in 2012 to enhance the resilience of rural communities in the Oromia and Somali region against the impact of climate change, such as droughts. The 3-component project works with target communities to strengthen their resilience by (1) building small-scale infrastructures (i.e. water facilities, livestock market, feeder roads) (2) constructing irrigation systems to extend irrigation agriculture (3) providing Weather Index Insurance for those more vulnerable to agricultural disaster due to climate change. The RREP can also be regarded as a drought-response program due to the capacity building and training it provides to communities in the Oromia and Somali region on how to enhance their resilience during times of drought. JICA provides technical assistance to pastoralists and agro-pastoralists that live in low-rainfall, drought prone areas and depend on agriculture and livestock grazing to survive.
