Quality Seed Promotion Project for Smallholder Farmers (QSPP)

In an effort to increase the production of Ethiopia's most important crops, teff and wheat, JICA and the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) launched the Quality Seed Promotion Project for Smallholder Farmers (QSPP) in 2010. This technical cooperation project will help smallholder farmers increase their teff and wheat yield by increasing the use of quality seeds. In addition, JICA experts provide their input and transfer their knowledge to the farmers on how to properly supervise the seeds in order to maximize the production of teff and wheat. QSPP is currently targeting selected woredas (districts) in the Oromia, Amhara and SNNP regions and is only specific to teff and wheat products. Within the project activities, there is the Seed Farmers School (SFS), which teaches farmers the production technologies of quality seed and helps disseminate the information to other smallholder farmers in the area. This extension approach (SFS) guarantees that the farmers understand the process of quality seed production and suggests a sustainable system for producing quality seeds. The QSPP is unique because it utilizes seed quality as a mechanism for sustainable agricultural development and teaches farmers how to maximize the production of their crops.
