One Village One Product Promotion Project (OVOP)

Rural and agricultural communities in Ethiopia are still under-developed but have a wealth of valuable resources (natural, cultural, historical and human). JICA introduced the One Village One Product (OVOP) approach to rural communities in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP) of Ethiopia through the OVOP Promotion Project in 2010 to promote community collectiveness through rural agro-businesses. In a technical cooperation with JICA the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture would like to use the OVOP approach to improve the livelihood of local farmers through a product diversification and added-value business strategy with other members of the community. JICA experts train local government officials on various OVOP schemes including: product development, community development and human resource development. The OVOP project not only encourages community development, but also promotes creativity and raises awareness about how local products can improve the livelihood of the entire community.
