Official Development Assistance is a term coined in 1969 by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to measure foreign aid. Japan throughout this period has been a top tier contributor to development assistance across developing countries, through its governmental agency, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Ethiopian coffee is central to the cultural and economic life of the country. With the assistance of JICA, WaBuB (Walada Bulchiinsa Bosonaa or ‘Forestry Management Association’) members, who are local growers of coffee, have acquired certification from the Rainforest  Alliance and found international buyers for their forest coffee produced in a sustainable manner.
