Activities in Iran

Emergency Disaster Relief

Bam

As a country that is also prone to earthquakes, Japan extended ongoing assistance to the maximum degree possible in the wake of the Bam earthquake. Immediately following the earthquake, JICA dispatched its Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team, which provided medical treatment to a total of 1,050 people. Japan also delivered some 2.5 billion Rials ($320,000) in emergency supplies (tents, blankets, electrical generators, etc.). Since then, JICA, in cooperation with Kerman Province Water and Wastewater Company, has helped secure drinking water for the residents of Bam and Bravat. This effort involved building a 2,000 m² reservoir in the two cities and laying water pipes from this reservoir having a total extension of 30 km.

Lorestan

After a series of earthquakes struck the outskirts of the western Iranian cities of Borujerd and Doroud in Lorestan Province on March 31,2006, a total of 70 people were confirmed dead and 1,264 people wounded. In addition, 330 villages and 15,000 houses suffered damage. The Iranian government, Red Crescent Society, civic and military organizations, and others provided relief for victims of the earthquakes.

The government of Japan provided emergency assistance worth ¥10 million (about $84,745) through JICA in response to a request from the Iranian government.
