Awarding Ceremony of the National Skill Competition – 2005

Department of Technical Education & Training (DTET), conducted its 2nd National Skills Competition on 30th January 2006 at Rathmalana Technical College and the awarding ceremony was held at the auditorium of DTET on 24th May 2006 in collaboration with JICA.

Skills Competition is one of the activities of the JSCoT project. Nearly 10 senior staff officers have visited Japan and gathered Japanese experience to conduct the skill Competition and they were behind this scene with the guidance of the Director General of DTET Dr. H.L.Obeyesekera and the Chief Advisor of the JSCoT project Mr. Yoshiaki Umimae.

The main objective of this Skills Competition is to promote skills among the trainees and enhance their capabilities to seek a higher degree of expertise, thereby raising socio and economic status of skilled workers and contributing to the development of the Sri Lankan industry as well as the economy.

Year 2005, Skills Competition began at the Technical College level in Engineering Draughtsman ship, Electrical, Plumbing, Welding, Masonry, Fitter Machinist, and Wood Work trades and selected the best student in each trade, and they were sent to the zonal level competition. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the zonal level in each trade have been selected to the national level competition. Those who got the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each trade from the national level competition were awarded certificates, medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze) and tool kits by the Hon. Minister of Vocational and Technical Training, Mr.Piyasena Gamage, Director General Dr.H.L.Obeyesekera, Asst.Resident Representative JICA Sri Lanka Mr. Ko Goto and the Chief Advisor JSCoT project Mr.Yoshiaki Umimae.

Certificates were also awarded to the competitors who won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places at zonal level in each trade and instructors who trained them. The trophies were awarded to the Technical Colleges which produced the 1st place in each trade.

The Chairmanof the National Skills Competition, Mr.H.G.Ranaweera announced that DTET will hold the 3rd National Skills Competition in year 2006 by adding three more trades.
