Factory Visit–MOGAMI STEEL TECH (PVT) LTD

On the 4th September 2007, Chief Advisor Mr. Ummae, Sheet Metal Expert Mr. Ito, all counterpart officers in the Metalwork section and counterpart officer, Japan Division visited Mogami Steel Tech (PVT) Ltd, which is situated in the city of Bandaragama south of the capital Colombo.

Chief Advisor briefly explained the project purpose to the Director, Mr. N. Inada and Mr. Somaweera, the Manager. According to Mr. Somaweera's briefing, this factory commenced in December 2006, as a Board of Investment (BOI) venture and their main product is junction boxes which will be exported to their head office in Japan.

This factory is equipped with CNC turret punchers, press breaks, shearing machines, band saw, robotic welding machine, spot welder, TIG, MIG, plasma cutting etc. At present they employ 20 staff, some of them were the students of CGTTI and ATI Katubadda. Their age range is 20–25 years. They import 5mm thickness steel sheets and scrapped sheets from Japan and turn out the junction boxes. All the employees are living in close proximity to this factory.

Mr. Somaweera stated that he will give the opportunity to train/employ our students if they wish to join the company. "We will send our staff to Japan for a period of 3 years to receive training and work at our factories in Japan" he added further.

Mr. Umimae thanked Mr. Inada and his staff for their cooperation. Finally Mr. Goonerwardena invited them to visit JSCoT Project and they accepted.
