Report of Short-Term Expert, Mr. T. Kawashima

Mr. Thoru Kawashima, the Short-term Expert in Metal work, presented his report on the 18th March, 2008.

While distributing a handout, he presented his progress on the following headings:

1.Production of an incinerator as a project,
2.Assisting supervisory module preparation,
3.Heat treatment using the electric furnaces,
4.Bending testing for welded joints,
5.Pressure testing for welded vessels,
6.Arc air gauging & TIG welding.

During his short stay in the JSCoT Project, he has trained counterpart officers in the Metal Work Section on various aspects such as marking, preparation works on jigs, cutting, assembling, painting, testing, sanding, heat treatment, cooling, buffing, etching, drying, microscopic examinations and Arc air gauging. Finally, Mr. Kawashima recommended the following things to be carried out:

1.To maintain the quality of products, counterpart officers should plan out every aspect and draw the diagram appropriately,
2.Further practice on thick plate welding by counterpart officers should be done,
3.To control the running costs, income generating programs/activities should be established,
4.Team spirit among counterpart officers should be maintained.

Mr. K. Goonewardena, Counterpart Officer (Japan Division), praised the work performed by Mr. Kawashima and requested the JSCoT Project to get Mr. Kawashima's services as short-term expert once again as he knows the Sri Lankans very well.

Mr. Umimae, the Chief Advisor, JSCoT Project, appreciated the services of Mr. Kawashima and stated that the paramount importance is that we teach our students what he taught us in a systematic manner as the supervisory modules. And he hoped Mr. Kawashima's assignment again.

Then, Mr. J. Ariyasinghe, HoD Model Courses, delivered the vote of thanks. Finally, Mr. S.K. Bandara, the Director Academic Affairs, DTET, made a short speech in the Japanese language and thanked Mr. Kawashima highlighting his training abilities through the Project work after visiting the Welding workshop.
