Training in Japan of the Career Guidance Officers of the Sri Lanka College of Technology

Under the auspices of the JICA-funded JSCoT Project, Ms. Kanchana Ganegoda and Mr. Wasantha Pothpitiya, two Career Guidance Officers attached to the Sri Lanka College of Technology (SL-CoT) Career Guidance Unit were sent to Japan for training to enhance and build their capacity on Career Guidance and Counseling activities with following objectives:

  1. To gain more knowledge and skills in Career Guidance and counseling day to day tasks in order to perform effectively and efficiently.
  2. Build capacity on Career Guidance and counseling related work to come up with innovative and efficient processes and systems.
  3. Build and adapt efficient techniques and methodologies which are practiced in Japan in order to make Career guidance and services more efficient and perform effectively.

They have been able to grasp knowledge and learn new techniques on improving Career Guidance related activities, such as Career Counseling, Job placement, maintaining student records, Scheme of Career Guidance, Linkage between the college and the private companies, Strengthen the co-corporation between the college staff about the student job placement, maintaining Company records and student job placements, Strengthen the co-operation between the college staff about the student job placement, strengthen co-skills; communication, team work, problem solving ,mentality, identify the client needs , How to express information, develop strong linkage between students and the companies, private company job searching, Matchmaking Procedure, Job seekers guidance for interview facing.

They were taken on tours to various places relating to Career guidance activities and given a chance to see how the career guidance activities are being conducted effectively. Few places they visited were Chiba Polytechnic College, Waseda University School of Counseling and Career Guidance.

The feedback from the career guidance officers about this program is excellent, positive, and they vowed to bring about a change in the way they work and motivated to improve the image and the Career Guidance services in the Sri Lanka College of technology as a Model College of Technology.
