Experts support teachers to teach Mathematics in and beyond classrooms

Ms Junko Funaki and Mr Akira Oshima, JICA experts hosted by South Africa's Department of Basic Education, implemented a workshop on 28 June 2022 during the 27th Annual National Congress of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA), held from 27 June 2022 to 1 July 2022 at the North-West University in Potchefstroom.

The experts presented the methodologies used in the Teaching Mathematics for Understanding (TMU) Field Test Project, which the experts are assisting in reorganizing curriculum for elementary Mathematics in pilot schools as well as in developing teacher guidance manuals (lesson plan). More than 100 participants, mostly teachers, joined the workshop and expressed their appreciation for the opportunity. JICA will continue supporting the Project in pursuit of improving Mathematics education in South Africa.
