[Background and the current situation]

In "vision 2025" , the government of Tanzania set a target of having 10,000MW generation capacity and having 85% electrification rate in the country. Currently generation capacity is 1,565 MW (2020) and access to electricity rate is 37 % (2019) respectively. There is a need of development of power infrastructure in the country. Also, the government of Tanzania promotes a diversification of power generation source. In addition to large hydro power plant, there is a potential of utilization of natural gas and renewables for increasing generation capacity.

[JICA's policy on development challenges]

In power sector, in align with the power system master plan, JICA supports a development of generation capacity including natural gas fired power plant in generation part. In addition, JICA supports a development of international transmission line, main transmission line in several cities as well as capacity development of operation and maintenance in transmission and distribution part.

[Program of Power Sector]

JICA contributes to power development planning support for effective and efficient resource development. Also, in order to expand stable power supply, contributes to develop the electricity public corporation's management and engineer's capacity by technical cooperation for strengthening power lines operation and maintenance capacity as well as mainly reinforce the transmission and distribution network by financial cooperation. Furthermore, in order to supply the electricity meet rapid growing power demand, JICA considers to support for power generation development including a thermal power plant by utilizing domestic natural resource which potential is highly expected through concessional loan
