Activities in Iraq

Capacity Development Program

Third Country Training Programs (TCTP)

TIG Welding Technology

Power facilities in Iraq have seriously deteriorated due to conflicts, lack of investments, maintenance, and looting after the last conflict. In 1990, installed power capacity was 9,295 MW, but about 70 percent of it was damaged during the 1991 Gulf War. It recovered to 4,000 MW through the Oil for Food Program by United Nations, but it dropped to 3,300 MW after the last conflict.

The Reconstruction works started in 2003, however, available generating capacity is still hovering around pre-war level. It is because sluggish of the reconstruction progress due to serious security constraints on the ground. Eventually, the Iraqi people suffer from frequent power outages throughout the country.

In order to meet the immediate electric power demand, it is important not only to fund physical rehabilitation projects, but also to support upgrading abilities of Iraqi engineers.

This Course provides Iraqi welding technicians with up-to-date TIG welding technologies. TIG welding is vital to rehabilitate power plants and its auxiliaries. They will obtain an internationally accredited certification (i.e. American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)) at the end of the Course.

After the completion of the Course, Iraqi participants with certificates are expected to disseminate their acquired knowledge among their colleagues to contribute to reconstruction and rehabilitation projects.
