Activities in Iraq

Capacity Development Program

Third Country Training Programs (TCTP)

Cable Jointing & Optical Fiber Splicing

Power facilities in Iraq have seriously deteriorated due to conflicts, lack of investment, maintenance and looting after the last conflict. In 1990, installed power capacity was 9,295 MW, but about 70 percent of it was damaged during the 1991 Gulf War. It recovered to 4,000 MW through the Oil for Food Program by United Nations, but it dropped to 3,300 MW after the last conflict.

The Reconstruction works started in 2003. However, available generating capacity is still hovering around the pre-war level. It is because of the sluggish reconstruction progress due to serious security constraints on the ground. Eventually, the Iraqi people suffer from frequent power outages throughout the country.

In order to meet the immediate electric power demand, it is important not only to fund physical rehabilitation projects, but also to support the upgrading abilities of Iraqi engineers.

The Course provides Iraqi participants to acquire the latest skills in cable jointing and optical fiber splicing. They will learn how to use the equipment and how to maintain the equipment safely.

The Japanese government has provided mobile sub stations to Iraq under grant aid assistance. Updating skills of Iraqi engineers is very important.

To learn about optical fiber splicing is also significant. The MOE is installing optical fiber cables along transmission lines to secure reliable high-speed and large volume communications. This enables them to communicate and control main substations. Also, they will be able to transmit and receive necessary electrical and electronic data for SCADA system being introduced.
