On July 17th, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in Bishkek to provide grant aid of up to 2.087 billion yen for the following two projects:
(1)The Project for Reconstruction of Urmaral River Bridge on Talas-Taraz Road (grant amount: 1.785 billion yen)
(2)The Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (grant amount: 0.302 billion yen)
The details of the projects are provided below.
(1)The Project for Reconstruction of Urmaral River Bridge on Talas-Taraz Road (grant amount: 1.785 billion yen)
<Objective and Summary>
Under this project, outstanding Japanese civil engineering technology will be utilized to rebuild a deteriorated bridge, thereby facilitating traffic on an international highway between Kyrgyzstan and neighboring Kazakhstan, and this is expected to contribute to stable economic development.

<Objective and Summary>
This project supports human resources development by providing young leaders from the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic with full scholarships to pursue postgraduate degrees in prestigious Japanese Universities. After returning home, participants are expected to contribute to the development of their country by actively engaging in planning and policy formulation, and also to expand and strengthen the friendship between Japan and the Kyrgyz Republic as individuals who possess a good understanding of Japan.
In the Kyrgyz Republic, the JDS program started in 2006 and 156 out of 191 participants graduated with master’s degrees and returned home. In the early phase, some of these graduates became cabinet members and many of them are now actively contributing to progress in various fields. As the number of former participants increases, the JDS graduates are becoming a progressive think tank of young technocrats in the government.
