With a view to share Fiji's experiences in the implementation of the Need-Based In-Service Training (NB-IST) with Tonga and Vanuatu, the second Regional Training for Nurses was conducted in August 2012. This was a three-day training program held in Nadorga-Navosa, Western Division, Fiji. Thirteen regional participants in total attended the training; precisely 7 from Tonga and 6 from Vanuatu. In addition, five national participants from three divisions in Fiji joined the program. The regional participants from Tonga and Vanuatu were mainly appointed from the MOH or district/provincial health offices, while Fijian participants were chosen from divisional hospitals, as IST coordinators are based in those hospitals.
One year has passed since the first regional training was held in the Central Division of Fiji with the purpose to share the experiences of the previous project in the Central Division. In this second regional training, the participants shared the progress made on the NB-IST and S&C mechanism in each country/division during the past year.
The Western Division has received attention for their efforts to improve their supervisory work/skills (S&C) with a great assistance from the Central Division despite facing two natural disasters this year. Such experiences in the Western Division were shared in the regional training.
Experiences in pursuing the sustainable NB-IST in each country were shared during the training through the presentations, group works, discussions, and a half-day field visit to sub-divisional hospital, health centers, and nursing stations. Also, the participants shared the tools developed and a management system (e.g. financial system, resource insurance, proposal application and reporting flow) of the NB-IST.
The practical action plan has been developed by the participants on the last day of the training which is to be implemented at their home countries next year.
