When the sustainability of the NB-IST system is taken into consideration, establishing national/divisional In-Service Training (IST) coordinator positions within the Ministry of Health (MOH) becomes one of the most important elements. Though the importance of such position is recognized by the department of nursing services, the MOH, due to a freeze on the establishment of new employment posts currently induced by the Public Service Commission, the process has been far prolonged.
This year, collaborating with the nursing department, the project demonstrated the roles as well as functions of IST coordination under the NB-IST system at the National Training Committee (NTC) meeting and divisional meetings. An official position description for IST coordinators has been produced and submitted to the permanent secretary, the MOH for his approval.
As a result of the team's continuous efforts toward promoting a better understanding on the importance of IST coordination, the NTC has approved to deploy the existing national/divisional IST coordinators officially in the MOH. In response to this, the MOH will submit an official request to the Public Service Commission for their approval in the near future. Although the process has a few remaining challenges ahead, the project will continue to provide assistance required to establish the positions in need.
