Many of those who emigrated or went abroad to work came from rural areas. As you can imagine, they probably knew very little about what was needed to travel abroad. Here, you can see one way they learned how to solve this problem.
Emigrants left Japan through the ports of Yokohama, Kobe, and Nagasaki. Around these ports there were places called “migrant lodges” where they could spend a few days before boarding the ship. These migrant lodges helped emigrants with getting tickets and boarding procedures for leaving Japan.
There were many migrant lodges around the port of Yokohama, as you can see. This map will show you how many migrant lodges there were.
