JICA President Tanaka visited Vietnam

With 2023 marking the 50th Anniversary of Japan-Vietnam Diplomatic Relations Establishment, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko visited Vietnam from March 5 to 8, 2023. While in Vietnam, President Tanaka took a podium at a High-Level Economic Conference, held meetings with key government officials, and visited cooperation project sites. At Vietnam Japan University, President Tanaka delivered a JICA Chair special lecture.

At the beginning of a meeting with Ms. Truong Thi Mai, Permanent Member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee’s Secretariat, Ms. Mai highly appreciated Japan’s contribution to her country’s development and also expressed her expectation that Vietnam will continue to proactively utilize Japan’s ODA. Ms. Mai also praised JICA’s training program for top officials of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and expressed her desire for close collaboration to further strengthen the relationship of both countries.

In response, President Tanaka congratulated Ms. Mai for assuming a Permanent Member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee’s Secretariat*, and was delighted to see the completion of Noi Bai International Airport Terminal 2 and Nhat Tan Bridge, which was under construction during his last visit to Hanoi in 2013, enabling him to travel smoothly into Hanoi City. President Tanaka also praised the effort of Vietnamese people and added that it was his pleasure that JICA was given the opportunity to work together with them to attain stable development,.

To commemorate the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Vietnam, “Vietnam–Japan High-Level Economic Conference for Celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the Two Countries’ Diplomatic Relations” was successfully held on March 7, 2023, in Hanoi City. The event received more than 250 people, which includes Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung, and Japan’s Ambassador to Vietnam Yamada Takio.

Prime Minister Chinh expressed his gratitude for Japanese ODA’s contribution to Vietnam’s socioeconomic development. Based on the bilateral friendship over the past 50 years, the Vietnam’s premier showed his expectation for further cooperation in Green Transformation (GX), Digital Transformation (DX), science and technology, and innovation.

President Tanaka made a special presentation in the second part of the conference. He reviewed JICA's cooperation efforts to date and delivered that JICA in cooperation with Vietnam will create a better future for both countries in the next generation through human resource development, social development, and country’s development, thus contribute to the stability and development of the region.

Beside the economic conference, President Tanaka delivered a JICA Chair special lecture at Vietnam Japan University. The lecture titled “Post-Cold War Japan” was attended by more than 70 students and faculty members. After the lecture, President Tanaka received many questions from the attendees that led to a vigorous dialogue.

*: Ms. Truong Thi Mai assumed Permanent Member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee’s Secretariat on March 6, 2023. Ms. Mai was a former Head of Organization Commission of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee.
