Signing of Grant Agreement with India: Support for the Improvement of Power Supply in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

On March 30, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of India in Delhi, to provide grant aid of up to 4,016 million yen for the Project for the Improvement of Power Supply in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The electricity supply that covers the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is going through a transitional period, moving away from outdated generation using diesel engine generators –which have become less reliable with low generation efficiency and frequent breakdowns, affecting even industrial activities – towards LNG-fired thermal power generation and solar power generation, which emit less carbon dioxide. Since solar power generates most of its electricity during the daytime when power demand is not high, effective use of this electricity requires the necessary equipment and capacity to store the surplus during the daytime and release it during peak hours at nighttime. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce storage batteries in South Andaman Island, the largest of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The objective of the project is to utilize the power generated from renewable energy sources and stabilize the power supply in the South Andaman Island by introducing the necessary equipment and facilities for energy storage, thereby contributing to the improvement of their industrial competitiveness. This project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goal 7 (Affordable and clean energy), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and 13 (Climate action).

Through the implementation of this project, it is expected that the emission of carbon dioxide will be reduced by 2,683 tons per year compared to 2020 in the three years after the project's completion. India announced its goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070 at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26). This project will contribute to achieving India's aim.
