On May 21, 2023, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Nusantara National Capital Authority (NNCA) of Republic of Indonesia signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the development of Indonesia’s new capital on the occasion of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima.

This plan aims to move Indonesia’s capital city from Jakarta to Kalimantan island, which will contribute to addressing issues such as traffic jams, land subsidence, and flooding in Jakarta, as well as to achieving well-balanced development throughout the whole of Indonesia via the development of the eastern part of the country. In January 2022, the Draft of New Capital Law was finally endorsed, and NNCA was established in March of the same year.

On the same day as the signing of the MoC, JICA Executive Senior Vice President Yamada Junichi held a bilateral meeting with the Chairman of NNCA Bambang Susantono in Hiroshima.

At the meeting, Vice President Yamada introduced JICA’s efforts and contributions to the development of the new capital to date, including support for the quality improvement of construction works for basic infrastructure in the new capital city, and distribution of information about its development to the Japanese private sector in order to promote investment in the plans. Both parties also exchanged views on future cooperation in the new-capital development field.

Through the MoC, JICA will continue to work on development issues in Indonesia, while strengthening its partnership with NNCA as well as with the Government of Indonesia.
