On July 19, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a four-party Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Ethiopia (MinT), Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia Plc (Safaricom Ethiopia), and Sumitomo Corporation.
The signing ceremony was held in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, and the MoC was signed by Minister of the MinT Belete Molla Getahun; General Manager for Africa Saida Tadao of Sumitomo Corporation; Acting Chief Executive Officer Stanley Njoroge of Safaricom Ethiopia; and Special Assistant to the President of JICA Nakamura Toshiyuki.
The purpose of the MoC is to contribute to the realization of “Digital Ethiopia 2025”—the Ethiopian government’s national ICT policy. The four parties will cooperate to maximize the synergistic effects of their respective businesses, establishing working groups in the following areas to explore further collaborative opportunities.
1. Infrastructure: Development of digital infrastructure, data centers, and end-user devices, etc.
2. Enabling Systems: Enhancement of digital financial services, digital ID systems, and cybersecurity etc.
3. Digital Interactions: Strengthening of e-government services, e-commerce, and electronic payments, etc.
4. Business Ecosystem: Promotion of digital transformation in the education, agriculture, healthcare, and tourism sectors.
5. Regulatory Framework, Job Creation and Capacity Building: Upgrading of the regulatory framework of the MinT, job creation, capacity development of digital technology professionals, support for digital entrepreneurs, and implementation of training programs in the telecommunications field, etc.
This collaboration will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and 17 (Partnerships for the goals).
