Signing of Grant Agreement with the Democratic Republic of the Congo: Contributing to the promotion of economic activity and improving the living environment of residents by stabilizing the power supply

[Goal 7] Affordable and Clean Energy
SDGs

2023.11.06

On November 2, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in Kinshasa to provide grant aid of up to 2,710 million yen for the Project for the Improvement of Access to Electricity in Mont Amba District of the City of Kinshasa.

In the DRC, the national average electrification rate remains at only 20%, against the backdrop of rapid population growth in Kinshasa and underdevelopment caused by long years of political instability as well as past civil wars.

Even in electrified areas, rolling blackouts occur frequently, and the electricity supply is restricted due to capacity shortages and aging of substation, transmission, and distribution facilities. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen and upgrade existing facilities and to increase the city’s power generation capacity so as to ensure a stable supply of electricity.

In order to respond to the rapidly increasing demand for electricity in Kinshasa City, this project aims to improve the capacity, reliability, and stability of the city’s power supply through the expansion of medium-voltage and low-voltage substations and development of the electricity distribution network at two main substations in the economic development district. Through these measures, the project will stimulate economic activities in the area and improve the living environment for residents, thereby contributing to the economic development of the district as well as to the achievement of SDGs Goal 7 (Affordable and clean energy).
