Signing of Grant Agreement with the Kyrgyz Republic: Contributing to the efficient use of water resources through support for the maintenance and management of irrigation canals

On December 11, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic to provide grant aid of up to 1,087 million yen for the Project for the Improvement of Equipment for Irrigation Channel Operation and Maintenance.
Kyrgyzstan is home to abundant water resources deriving from snowmelt from the Tianshan Mountains and other mountainous regions. As a result, irrigation systems cover a wide area of farmlands throughout the country.
However, most of the irrigation canals that support Kyrgyz agriculture were constructed during the former Soviet Union period and have deteriorated over time, so the maintenance and management of these canals has become a major issue. Moreover, since the equipment for maintaining and managing the canals dates to around the same time, there is concern that inefficient canal maintenance due to aging equipment will have a tremendous impact on agricultural production.

This project aims to upgrade the aging irrigation canal maintenance equipment owned by the Kyrgyz Republic’s Department of Water Resources, thereby achieving the appropriate, efficient, and effective maintenance and management of the country’s canals. In doing so, it will contribute to the efficient use of water resources and improvement of agricultural productivity in Kyrgyzstan, as well as to the achievement of SDGs Goal 2 (Zero hunger).
