Signing of Grant Agreement with Senegal : Contributing to the promotion of stable marine exports through the development of highly sanitary landing facilities
2024.01.23
On January 23, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Senegal to provide grant aid of up to 1,118 million yen for The Project for the Improvement of Advanced Fish Landing Facilities for Valorization of Fishery Products in Joal-Fadiouth.
Senegal is home to one of the leading fisheries in West Africa. An important industry for the country, the fisheries sector accounts for approximately 12% of total exports. However, existing landing facilities are unprotected from the wind and rain as well as birds and other animals, and, with no continuous temperature control, the freshness and quality of marine products at these facilities is in the process of deteriorating. Producing marine products of a quality suitable for export, while ensuring their stable distribution, has thus become a serious issue.
Signing Ceremony
This project will upgrade existing landing facilities into those capable of advanced sanitary management, thereby enabling the stable distribution of marine products produced by small-scale fisheries—many of whose workers live in poverty—as high value-added exports. This project will therefore contribute to the promotion of the fisheries industry as well as to the achievement of SDGs Goal 14 (Life below water).
