On November 7, 2024, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held its 2024 Memorial Ceremony in front of the Monument for International Cooperation at its Ichigaya Headquarters. The annual ceremony commemorates those who lost their lives while engaged in JICA projects and reaffirms JICA’s commitment to prioritizing the lives and safety of those involved in international cooperation.

The ceremony was attended by JICA President Tanaka Akihiko, other JICA executives and staff, as well as representatives from the Japan Overseas Cooperation Association (JOCA), the Supporting Organization of JOCV (Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers), and family members of JOCV who lost their lives during their assignments.

In his remarks, President Tanaka emphasized the importance for everyone to treat safety measures as a personal priority, urging that safety awareness and changing behavior are essential. He also expressed the commitment to foster an organizational culture that stresses safety by remembering and learning from past incidents.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of Japan’s international cooperation. While reflecting on this long history and the profound contributions of those involved in its projects, JICA pledges to advance its efforts with the highest priority on human life and safety.
