Launch of Technical Cooperation for Infectious Disease Control in the ASEAN Region: Aiming to strengthen the region’s public health crisis response

On January 28, a commemorative ceremony was held in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, marking the launch of technical cooperation aimed at establishing and strengthening capacity at the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED).

ACPHEED will serve as a key hub for preparedness, detection, and response to public health emergencies and emerging infectious diseases in the ASEAN region. The Japanese government announced its support for the center’s establishment at the Special ASEAN Plus Three Summit on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) held in April 2020. In accordance with this, JICA will dispatch experts over a three-year period starting in January 2025 to provide the necessary technical support for ACPHEED’s establishment and operation.
The ceremony was attended by Thai government officials represented by Deputy Permanent Secretary Pongsathorn of the Ministry of Public Health. In attendance on the Japanese side were JICA experts and key representatives such as Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister and Permanent Representative to United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Nishioka Tatsushi of the Embassy of Japan in Thailand, and Senior Representative Kawabe Ryoichi of the JICA Thailand Office.
