Primary objectives and outcomes

The Paris Agreement was a landmark decision for those already on the frontlines of the climate crisis. As Small island developing statesSIDS and other vulnerable communities actively work towards building resilience and implementing sustainable solutions capable of ensuring their future, funding these projects remains a critical component. This event focused into the challenges and opportunities within access to climate finance

Content of the discussions

This side event highlighted the challenges of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to access climate finance, the need for the policies of financial institutions to be adapted to the context of the SIDS and the importance of promoting capacity building and the vulnerability of those countries to be recognized.

JICA highlighted the importance of delivering climate finance in the context of sustainable development. Also, how JICA is tackling the challenges faced by SIDS, delivering capacity building, implementing project including the construction of Pacific Climate Center in Samoa followed by technical cooperation. Formulating project to access Green Climate Fund cooperation with government of Maldives and Timor Leste and using different scheme of cooperation to support public sector as well the private sector engagement.
