Primary objectives and outcomes

Although Kenya enjoys a rich diversity of natural resources, the degradation of natural resources due to climate change in recent years has caused a number of challenges that need to be addressed with stronger financial and institutional support.Kenya is promoting the planting and growing of 15 billion trees by 2032 through all-government, all-society approach.

This event presents best practices of landscape and ecosystem restoration efforts in Kenya, describe access to finance for further efforts, and discusses ways to attract development partners and private sector investment.

Content of the discussions

This side event was presented at the 'Kenya Pavilion', where the Kenyan Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry and the World Bank invited the audience to mobilise funds for 'Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Initiatives', and the UNFCCC presented an overview of the current status of REDD+. During the event, Mr. Sakaguchi thanked the Government of Kenya lef by MECCF for their collaboration with JICA in the areas of policy and technology development of Forest Sector, including the on-going SFS-CORECC project in Kenya, which has achieved a number of results, and also highlighted that project results, such as the breeding of tree species which are high adaptive capacities to arid and semi-arid areas, are currently being used in Kenya's 15 billion tree planting campaign and expanding it to regional cooperation in Africa as a leader of this area in Africa. The Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Ms. Tuya, reiterated her appreciation for the technical cooperation of JICA and other development partners in the forest sector, and this side event contributed to raising awareness of the JICA's forest sector cooperation both nationally and internationally.
